Since I was a kid, I thought of myself as an artist. There are so many memories to sift through, and stories from before those, of me drawing. Sprawled on the kitchen or living room floor as a little kid, in dull classrooms as a teen, passing time between rides hitchhiking as a young adult, and now carving snippets of moments between parenting and paid work… DRAWING. I paint and sew, have done performance art of various kinds, experimented with pottery, and all kinds of visual art and craft. Something I recently discovered though, is that the real through line has been writing. I love to describe things, am obsessed with words. Talking about what I make or do has always been the way I make it real.
I like to write about things that are important to me, things I know how to do, things I make, things that are beautiful. I write poems.
Consider this my official departure from this closet. I believe I am a writer, and if you do too you can follow along here. BASKET is my new magazine, which will live here on Substack (at least as far as I can foresee today). BASKET is a hand hewn container for all my very best things to share. You can expect instructional writing (about cooking, herbalism, and my other skills and passions), culture and philosophical writing about things like queerness, spirituality, parenting and communal living, and yes even my little poems.
And yes, I will still be drawing.
Welcome!
